In March, we had the opportunity to attend an inspiring workshop with ApiChorus A Capella from Harvard University (USA).
ApiChorus describes itself as "Harvard’s leading Jewish a cappella choir and a student organisation affiliated with Harvard Hillel, founded in 2023 and comprising a mixed choir of students from Harvard University. The choir sings a diverse repertoire of Hebrew and English classics, represents a broad spectrum of Jewish backgrounds, and performs both at venues in Cambridge and at concerts around the world.” (https://www.apichorus.org/)
We were excited and curious about this workshop. On the one hand, of course, to get to know the choir members, and on the other, to sing together. After a round of introductions, we got straight into warming up and singing together. ApiChorus started with a song from their repertoire. We were thrilled by the a cappella singing, the enthusiasm and the accompanying performance.
Then it was our turn with two songs from our repertoire – a cappella. That was a bit of a challenge, as we usually sing with piano accompaniment. After a short warm-up, it went quite well. We then went on to rehearse and sing one of the songs performed by the other choir’s repertoire together.
To round things off, we sang the song Yerushalayim shel Zahav together, wich both choirs have in their repertoire. You can get a brief glimpse here
ApiChorus headed straight off to the next stop on their European tour, whilst for us the workshop remains an inspiring experience and a reminder that a cappella singing can be great fun.
